CBB26 Japanese Pond Turtles (M. japonica)

These turtles are incredibly active and personable right out of the egg - they literally seem to run out their eggs. They are a real pleasure to work with out of all of the Mauremys genus. They are intelligent and very engaging. Their shells take on a beautiful bronze coloration as they age. Japanese Pond Turtles come from the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu of Japan. They are quite cold tolerant provided appropriate depth to brumate. They inhabit slow moving waters, shallow lakes, swamps, marsh and even rice paddies with sandy to muddy bottoms . They do best in a mostly aquatic environment with some area of land to explore. A setup offering 2/3 area of water with 1/3 area of land should work well along with an area providing a good basking site. Good filtration is a must with regular water changes and a varied diet. These turtles are mostly carnivores while young but do eat some aquatic plant matter as they age. Adults males average about 5" while adult females can get as large as 8".

These captive-bred/born hatchlings are eating well on frozen blood worms, earthworms, mealworms, canned river shrimp, frozen beef heart and aquatic turtle pellets. They are in solid health and ready to go. Temperature Sex Incubated(TSI) sexes are available.
