CBB26 Pearl River Map Turtle (G. pearlensis)

Pearl River Map Turtles are part of the broad head map turtle species with females having powerful jaws adapted to crush freshwater mussels. They are quite stunning in color with a beautiful green mask over the eyes. Pearl River Map Turtles are found only in the Pearl River system of Mississippi and Louisiana in generally sandy to light gravel bottomed areas. They are quite cold tolerant provided appropriate depth to brumate. They do best with good flow or current in clean water. A setup can be almost entirely aquatic but an area for consistent basking is a must. Good filtration is always important along with regular water changes and a varied diet. In the wild these turtles eat freshwater sponge, various mussels, mollusks and aquatic insects though they will graze occasionally on algae as well. Adult males average about 5" with some variation. Adult females on the other hand can reach almost 12" in size. It is important to consider this for space and filtration requirements.

These captive-bred/born hatchlings are eating well on frozen blood worms, earthworms, mealworms, canned river shrimp, frozen beef heart and aquatic turtle pellets.
